Therefore, this time around, we would like to shed light on an article that we found that discussed how the design—especially the process of designing—a new hospital for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan–Troy involved input from patients to help to reshape (for the better) workflow and pediatric care.

Well, it is an excellent example of what it took for a hospital's staff to improve the patient experience. What’s more, this article contains examples of what we believe to be innovative approaches to making things better for a hospital's patients, staff, and other visitors.
In a nutshell, a large group of the hospital's support staff, nurses, and physicians got together and utilized a "Lean Technique" referred to as "Integrated Facility Design" to identify what was and wasn't working in their current facility. For example, they realized that waiting rooms were inefficient, and thus brainstormed ways that they could streamline check-in processes.
When it all came down to it, they determined that implementing a process called “standard work procedures” will help to improve patient safety and satisfaction levels, and that executing a process called “level loading” will help to guarantee that children who come to their facility are not left waiting hours after their appointment time. And, in the end, they were able to come with a truly innovative design for a healthcare facility that not only looks great, but that was also constructed to better please their patients!
